EN And it came to pass, when Jesus had made an end of commanding his twelve disciples, he passed from thence, to teach and to preach in their cities.

GR εἶπεν αὐτῷ, σὺ εἶ ὁ ἐρχόμενος ἢ ἕτερον προσδοκῶμεν;
EN Are you he that is to come, or look we for another?
^3
4
EN And Jesus making answer said to them: Go and relate to John what you have heard and seen.
^4
5
LA Cæci vident, claudi ambulant, leprosi mundantur, surdi audiunt, mortui resurgunt, pauperes evangelizantur:
EN The blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead rise again, the poor have the gospel preached to them.
^5
6
LA et beatus est, qui non fuerit scandalizatus in me.
EN And blessed is he that shall not be scandalized in me.
^6
[!note]- Scandalized in me…
That is, who shall not take occasion of scandal or offence from my humility, and the disgraceful death of the cross which I shall endure.
7
GR Τούτων δὲ πορευομένων ἤρξατο ὁ Ἰησοῦς λέγειν τοῖς ὄχλοις περὶ Ἰωάννου: τί ἐξήλθατε εἰς τὴν ἔρημον θεάσασθαι; κάλαμον ὑπὸ ἀνέμου σαλευόμενον;
EN And when they went their way, Jesus began to say to the multitudes concerning John: What went you out into the desert to see? A reed shaken with the wind?
^7
8
LA Sed quid existis videre? hominem mollibus vestitum?
EN But what went you out to see? A man clothed in soft garments? Behold they that are clothed in soft garments, are in the houses of kings.
^8
9
LA Sed quid existis videre? prophetam? Etiam dico vobis, et plus quam prophetam.
EN But what went you out to see? A prophet? Yea I tell you, and more than a prophet.
^9
10
EN For this is he of whom it is written: Behold I send my angel before your face, who shall prepare your way before you.
^10
11
EN Amen I say to you, there has not risen among them that are born of women a greater than John the Baptist: yet he that is the lesser in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
^11
12
LA A diebus autem Joannis Baptistæ usque nunc, regnum cælorum vim patitur, et violenti rapiunt illud.
EN And from the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent bear it away.
^12
13
EN For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John:
^13
14
EN And if you will receive it, he is Elias that is to come.
^14
15
GR ὁ ἔχων ὦτα ἀκουέτω.
LA Qui habet aures audiendi, audiat.
EN He that has ears to hear, let him hear.
^15
[!note]- Suffers violence, etc…
It is not to be obtained but by main force, by using violence upon ourselves, by mortification and penance, and resisting our perverse inclinations.
[!note]- He is Elias, etc…
Not in person, but in spirit (Luke 1:17).
16
LA Cui autem similem æstimabo generationem istam? Similis est pueris sedentibus in foro: qui clamantes coæqualibus
EN But whereunto shall I esteem this generation to be like? It is like to children sitting in the market place.
^16
17
EN Who crying to their companions say: We have piped to you, and you have not danced: we have lamented, and you have not mourned.
^17
18
EN For John came neither eating nor drinking; and they say: He has a devil.
^18
19
EN The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say: Behold a man that is a glutton and a wine drinker, a friend of publicans and sinners. And wisdom is justified by her children.
^19
20
LA Tunc cœpit exprobrare civitatibus, in quibus factæ sunt plurimæ virtutes ejus, quia non egissent pœnitentiam:
EN Then began he to upbraid the cities wherein were done the most of his miracles, for that they had not done penance.
^20
21
LA Væ tibi Corozain, væ tibi Bethsaida: quia, si in Tyro et Sidone factæ essent virtutes quæ factæ sunt in vobis, olim in cilicio et cinere pœnitentiam egissent.
EN Woe to you, Corozain, woe to you, Bethsaida: for if in Tyre and Sidon had been wrought the miracles that have been wrought in you, they had long ago done penance in sackcloth and ashes.
^21
22
LA Verumtamen dico vobis: Tyro et Sidoni remissius erit in die judicii, quam vobis.
EN But I say unto you, it shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in the day of judgment, than for you.
^22
23
LA Et tu Capharnaum, numquid usque in cælum exaltaberis? usque in infernum descendes, quia si in Sodomis factæ fuissent virtutes quæ factæ sunt in te, forte mansissent usque in hanc diem.
EN And you Capharnaum, shall you be exalted up to heaven? You shall go down even unto hell. For if in Sodom had been wrought the miracles that have been wrought in you, perhaps it had remained unto this day.
^23
24
LA Verumtamen dico vobis, quia terræ Sodomorum remissius erit in die judicii, quam tibi.
EN But I say unto you, that it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment than for you.
^24
25
EN At that time Jesus answered and said: I confess to you, O Father, Lord of Heaven and earth, because you have hid these things from the wise and prudent, and have revealed them to little ones.
^25
26
EN Yea, Father: for so has it seemed good in your sight.
^26
27
EN All things are delivered to me by my Father. And no one knows the Son but the Father: neither does any one know the Father, but the Son, and he to whom it shall please the Son to reveal him.
^27
28
EN Come to me all you that labor and are burdened, and I will refresh you.
^28
29
EN Take up my yoke upon you, and learn of me, because I am meek, and humble of heart: And you shall find rest to your souls.
^29
30
EN For my yoke is sweet and my burden light.
